If, like me, you need some small gift boxes at the last minute, here’s a quick idea! You will need:
- A Christmas card – I’m recycling old ones!
- scissors
- clear sticky tape
- a pencil/pen
- a ruler
1. Cut the card in half so you have separated the front and the back.
2. Using the ruler, draw a line a few millimeters from the edge along two sides of the back of the card. Cut along these lines to reduce the size of the back of the card. This is so the bottom of the box will fit inside the top.
3. Again using the ruler, measure and draw lines about 3 cm in from the sides of the card on all four sides. It helps later to score these lines lightly with your scissors.
4. At the corners, cut up to the crossing line on two sides of the card only. You want to make flaps the secure the sides of the box together.
5. Fold the sides along the lines you scored earlier.
6. With the tabs inside the box, tape the corners to form the sides of the box.
7. Now, follow steps 3-6 with the top of the box – don’t make the top smaller, as it needs to fit over the bottom of the box. I found it was helpful to tape the inside corners of the top as well as the outside to make the box easier to close.
8. Put your treasures inside and close! You don’t even need to wrap it, as it’s already got a lovely pattern!
The shape and size of your card will determine the shape and size of your box, so plan accordingly. If you need a deeper box, draw your lines more than 3cm in from the sides of the card. This will make the bottom smaller though!
